Azerbaijan, the Land of Fire, had long been on our travel list, and this February, we finally made it happen. Over the course of five incredible days, we explored the perfect blend of ancient history, modern architecture, and breathtaking landscapes. From the charming streets of Baku to the fiery landscapes of Gobustan and the snowy peaks of Shahdag, every moment was a mix of adventure and discovery. Whether it was walking through the historic Old City, marveling at the futuristic Flame Towers, or experiencing the surreal Mud Volcanoes, Azerbaijan had something unique to offer at every turn. Here’s how our journey unfolded.

Getting There

We flew from Abu Dhabi to Baku, as Wizz Air provided a significantly cheap air ticket compared to direct flights from Dubai or Sharjah. Once we arrived, since we had booked a tour package, our driver was waiting for us at the airport. As we have mentioned multiple times throughout, comparing the price to value of booking a package, vs arranging everything yourself individually is very important to decide. If we can get peace of mind by paying slightly extra, it is always worth it!

The Azerbaijani Manat (AZN) is the official currency of Azerbaijan, with 1 AED equaling approximately 0.46 AZN and 1 USD around 1.70 AZN. This makes Azerbaijan a budget-friendly destination for travelers from the UAE and the US. While credit cards are widely accepted in Baku, it's always a good idea to carry some cash, especially when visiting smaller towns or rural areas.

Accommodation

Since we went with a tour operator, hotels and transportation were taken care of.

  • Central Park Hotel was the selected hotel of choice, it was 15 minute walk to the city center and the happening streets such as Nizami street. Comfortable stay with breakfast.

  • Our Hotel in Shadag was part of the Autograph collection, Park Chalet, Shadag. As mentioned earlier, it is the perfect place to stay if you want to enjoy skiing, although I believe there will be cheaper alternatives, this one provides extreme convenience.

Itinerary

  • Day 1: Arrival in Baku

We landed in Baku late in the evening, greeted by the crisp February air and the warm hospitality of our driver. After a smooth airport transfer, we checked into our hotel, ready to rest and recharge for the exciting days ahead. The city’s nighttime skyline, dotted with glittering lights, hinted at the adventures awaiting us.

  • Day 2: Exploring Baku – Where the Past Meets the Future

Our exploration of Baku began at 10:00 AM. The city effortlessly blends ancient history with futuristic architecture, and we saw this contrast firsthand.

The day kicked off with a visit to the iconic Heydar Aliyev Center, an architectural masterpiece with its flowing curves and futuristic design. Next, we stopped by the Baku Conference Center, followed by the towering Flame Towers and Upland Park, offering stunning panoramic views of the city. Strolling along Baku Boulevard, we passed the charming Little Venice and the fascinating Carpet Museum, with its exterior shaped like a rolled-up carpet. After a relaxing lunch break, we ventured into the historic Old City. Wandering through its cobblestone streets, we admired landmarks like the Maiden Tower, the majestic Shirvanshah’s Palace, and the quirky Miniature Books Museum.

To wrap up the day, we explored the lively Nizami Street, where modern shops meet traditional charm. Exhausted but exhilarated, we returned to our hotel for a peaceful night’s rest.

  • Day 3: Gobustan & Absheron – Ancient Mysteries and Fiery Wonders

Our day started early as we headed to Gobustan, famous for its Mud Volcanoes and ancient rock carvings that date back thousands of years. Witnessing these natural and historical wonders felt like stepping back in time. Next, we visited the beautiful Bibi-Heybat Mosque, its elegant design and spiritual atmosphere offering a moment of serenity. After a delicious lunch, the tour continued to the Fire Temple (Ateshgah) and the captivating Burning Hill (Yanar Dag), where natural gas flames have been burning for centuries.

Returning to the hotel, we felt enriched by the unique blend of nature and history that the day had offered.

  • Day 4: Shahdag – Adventure in the Mountains

Leaving the city behind, we embarked on a scenic drive to Shahdag, Azerbaijan’s premier ski and summer resort. The snow-capped mountains were a sight to behold, and the crisp mountain air was invigorating. We spent the afternoon enjoying various activities, from the thrilling cable car ride to the adrenaline-pumping zip line and even a roller coaster through the snowy terrain. Shahdag was a paradise for adventure lovers, and we ended the day with satisfied smiles before resting at a cozy hotel in the mountains.

  • Day 5: Guba – Carpets, Villages, and Forests

Our final full day began with a visit to Guba, a region known for its picturesque landscapes and cultural heritage. We explored the charming Red Village, home to the Mountain Jews, and witnessed artisans at work at the Guba Handmade Carpet Factory. After a lunch break surrounded by the tranquility of Gechresh Forest, we stopped at several panoramic viewpoints, each offering breathtaking vistas of the region’s natural beauty. By evening, we were back in Baku, where we spent our last night reminiscing about the incredible journey.

  • Day 6: Farewell to Azerbaijan

All good things must come to an end. On our final morning, we packed our bags and enjoyed a leisurely breakfast before heading to the airport for our 10:15 AM flight. Azerbaijan had left us with unforgettable memories of its rich culture, stunning landscapes, and warm hospitality.

Cost

We opted for a tour package for Azerbaijan (Baku & Shahdag), which included hotels, transfers and tours. Below is the total cost of our trip broken down into an estimation to the best of our calculation.

Final Thoughts, Tips and Advice

  • Visa Requirements: Check if you need a visa before traveling. Azerbaijan offers an easy online visa application process for many nationalities.

  • Currency: The local currency is the Azerbaijani Manat (AZN). Exchange your money at local banks or exchange offices for the best rates.

  • Weather: February in Azerbaijan can be chilly, especially in Shahdag. Pack warm clothing, especially if you’re planning mountain activities.

  • Transportation: Having a tour guide or driver is highly recommended for seamless travel and insider knowledge. You can always rent a car, but for us it was easier to have a driver and tour guide to make things more convenient.

  • Cuisine: Don’t miss trying traditional Azerbaijani dishes like plov, kebabs, and dolma. Local restaurants offer a great taste of the country’s culinary heritage.
